Rainbow School originated in 1978 as an opportunity for Mendocino Presbyterian Church families to give their children a preschool experience with a loving, spiritual emphasis. It began as one small class downstairs in Preston Hall, Mendocino, California, sharing the facility with a parent-cooperative nursery school.

As Rainbow School grew, other families in the community sought the caring environment that we provided. In 1981 we added afternoon child care, and in 1982 Rainbow School became California state-licensed with Community Care Licensing (license number 2301023490).

Between 1989 and 2012 we offered a kindergarten and after-school program for elementary-age children. In 1998 Rainbow School started a play group program for two- to three-year olds. In 2012 we added afternoon enrichment classes.

Today Rainbow School serves over 45 families in our morning and afternoon programs for children aged 2 to 6 years.
